Report on the Annual Art Show

PORTENCROSS CASTLE ART SALE 2026

The weather makes a difference to this event and this year it behaved very well, apart, that is, from a horrendous downpour shortly after the picture hanging was complete on Friday afternoon, with water gushing into the Great Hall through the gable wall. Luckily it was spotted quickly. A big wipe down and rehanging saved the day and no noticeable damage was done.

Altogether 125 items were exhibited, of which 36 were sold. Sales included four paintings donated by Lorna Hutcheson, who also donated the beautiful painting which was the Raffle Prize. Many thanks to Lorna for her generosity, and to Barbara Florence for facilitating.

Altogether £2,876.50, including from teas at South Banks House, was raised for Castle funds. The Directors of Friends of Portencross Castle, all volunteers themselves, were assisted by many volunteer helpers. There were teams for: taking in, hanging and selling the exhibits; helping with the teas; erecting the marquee and the framework for hanging exhibits in the Great Hall; and then returning everything back to normal ready for daily opening at the Castle. Many, many thanks to all of these helpers.

And thanks to all of you who attended!

The Castle is now open daily throughout July and August, 11am until 4pm. It is free of charge and beautifully cool during any hot spells. If you have been wondering about joining the band of volunteer guides, then please get in touch. It’s fun!
